The LSS group mission

The LSS group comprises a range of instruments designed to carry out studies on the structure of matter on a scale of one to hundreds of nanometers and up to microns. The range of science covered is broad, from polymer and colloid science through structural biology, materials science and magnetism.

 

Your tasks

Working within the LSS Group in the field of Neutron Reflectometry while carrying out your own active research programme on biophysical or soft matter systems at interfaces, you will be in charge of:

  • co-running the D17 reflectometer participating both in the day-to-day operation of the instrument as well as its technical development and upgrades,

  • providing support to users for scientific experiments and offering guidance with data analysis,

  • promoting scientific partnerships in your field of research,

  • participating in the longer term development of instrumentation, sample environment and data analysis.

 

Your profile

  • Ph.D. in physics, biophysics or physical chemistry.

  • Experience of research in soft matter or biological systems at solid/liquid interfaces.

  • General skills in method and/or software development would be an asset.

  • As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL).

The post represents an excellent opportunity for a postdoctoral scientist to develop expertise, broaden experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world. FRANCIA - PROJECT ENGINEER – NUCLEAR PRESSURE EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING

Your mission

The Mechanical Engineering Service is part of the ILL’s Reactor Division and is responsible for the maintenance of the technical equipment associated with the high-flux reactor. Reporting to the Head of Service, you will be responsible for monitoring the manufacture of a number of spare components for the reactor block and will assist with the updating of regulatory compliance documents for nuclear pressure equipment (known as ESPN - Equipements Sous Pression Nucléaires). In this context, you will work under the supervision of a senior engineer, who is in charge of mechanical manufacturing projects and is also the Institute’s ESPN expert.

 

Your main tasks will be to:

Draft the manufacturing specifications (using existing templates)

Check the component drawings produced by the design office

Produce the technical documentation for calls for tender and select manufacturers

Produce the manufacturing documentation necessary for conformity assessment by the relevant approved certified body

Monitor the manufacturing stages (procurement, machining, inspection, validation, gap analysis, etc.)

Validate the final acceptance of the equipment

Update the internal regulatory documents relating to the reactor (list of conditions and loadings, etc.)

Participate in the organization and response of the ILL to ESPN regulatory requirements for in-service monitoring (repairs, modifications, etc.), both internally and externally (AFCEN,…).

Alongside your duties, you will join, in the medium term, the team of engineers involved in the reactor’s operations and crisis management.

 

Your profile

Level 7 qualification (Master’s degree or equivalent) specialising in mechanical engineering or metallurgy

At least 5 years’ professional experience, in particular in the monitoring of manufacturing within a nuclear quality assurance framework

Knowledge of regulations governing nuclear pressure equipment (ESPN) and of design and construction codes of the type RCC-MRx (or RCC-M) for mechanical components for reactors

Knowledge of metalworking and welding (GMAW/MIG, GTAW/TIG or electron beam), ideally on the aluminium alloy Ag3Net, stainless steel or zircaloy

Excellent writing skills (procedures, technical specifications, etc.)

You have excellent interpersonal skills and will be required to work with several different actors (workshop staff, suppliers, inspection bodies).

Your duties

Working within the Nuclear and Particle Physics group of the ILL at the Ultra-Cold and Very Cold Neutron Sources you will:

Your profile

PhD in physics with a strong knowledge of experimental particle physics, neutron optics or quantum mechanical phenomena.

Having some professional experience as a Post-Doc in a research institution is of advantage.

Working within the LSS Group in the field of Macromolecular Crystallography (MX), in addition to carrying out your own active research programme, you will be responsible for the tasks listed below.

Your tasks

Co-managing the LADI-DALI beamline, participating both in the day-to-day running of the instruments and their technical development
• Providing support to users for scientific experiments and helping them collect data under optimum conditions
• Promoting scientific partnerships in your field of research.

The LADI-DALI beamline comprises two quasi-Laue diffractometers (LADI and DALI), both dedicated to high-resolution crystallographic studies of biological macromolecules in order to locate H-atoms of special interest, providing information on protonation states, H-bonding and water molecule orientations that can be critical for understanding biomacromolecular function and behaviour.

Your profile

HEAD OF ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING GROUP

Your tasks
The Environmental Monitoring group, which comprises a head of group and five technicians, is responsible for environmental radiation monitoring on and in the vicinity of the ILL site. Reporting to the Head of the Health Physics, Safety, and Environment Service, your duties will be to:

  • Ensure that the environmental monitoring laboratory operates smoothly:

Maintain and operate the facilities and equipment needed for environmental monitoring at the ILL and in the Grenoble area (monitoring laboratories and stations and a weather mast)
− Ensure that the laboratory is adequately stocked with the supplies and consumables needed for its operation
− Place orders with service providers and subcontractors and monitor and supervise their work
− Draw up the laboratory's operating budget and the necessary investments.

  • Guarantee the quality of the analyses conducted and the results produced, in compliance with the quality, safety and radiation protection standards applicable to French nuclear facilities (INBs) and within the required deadlines:

Obtain and maintain the necessary authorisations for taking the different measurements
− Produce periodic environmental monitoring reports

  • Monitor changes in regulations and standards and adapt the Group's operations accordingly

  • Assist with quality management:

Ensure compliance with, and the implementation and development of, the integrated Quality Management System (IMS) applicable to the laboratory and to French nuclear facilities (INBs)
− Ensure that ISO 17025 certification is maintained
− Play a part in the continuous improvement of the Group and the Service

  • Act as the contact point for relevant stakeholders, both inside and outside the ILL

  • Manage the team:

Supervise, manage and organise the work (management of on-call duties, annual interviews, etc.)
− Manage the recruitment of laboratory staff and monitor the team’s skills set

Your profile
  • You have a Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) in the field of metrology or chemistry, together with at least five years’ experience in a similar post, including team management experience.
  • Expertise in nuclear metrology is required.
  • Excellent writing skills (in French).
  • Knowledge of the standard NF EN ISO/CEI 17025 (2017), as well as of nuclear installations and/or radioactive environments would be an asset.
  • You are a strong team player but must also able to work independently; you must be meticulous and well organised.
