FRANCIA - INDUSTRIAL LIAISON OFFICER / ENGINEER

Your mission

Within the Industrial Liaison Unit (ILU) of ILL’s Partnerships and Communication Service (PACS - 9 people), you will create an effective and efficient interface between industry research and development (R&D) and the cutting-edge neutron techniques available at the ILL.

 

Your tasks

In this context, you will:

Organise and ensure the efficiency of feasibility studies and proprietary beam time, working closely with instrument scientists and industry clients.

Optimise an industry strategy to increase industry R&D activity at ILL, including revenue from this activity (currently 0.5 M€ per year).

Undertake outreach and communication activities for industry R&D at ILL to build up a portfolio of high-potential industry contacts and generate new business opportunities.

Manage the customer base and maintain an accurate record of all industry-related activities at ILL for periodic reporting to ILL Management.

With support from the legal service at ILL, organise the contractual agreements for proprietary beam time.

With the ILL’s European project office, identify and pursue project-based opportunities for industry-related research at ILL.

Liaise with local, regional and international partners to nurture a robust, collective approach to industry services at large-scale research facilities.

 

Your profile

You hold a Master’s degree in engineering or a natural science (or equivalent qualification) and have several years of experience in a range of analytical techniques, preferably using neutrons.

You have excellent communication skills, are highly interested in applied research and have some experience in working with industry.

You have a strong project management culture, which will enable you to plan and manage the ILL’s involvement in R&D with industry partners.

FRANCIA - HEAD OF THE RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT GROUP

Your tasks

The Radioactive Waste Management Group, comprising a head of group, an engineer and four technicians, is responsible for the collection, treatment and conditioning of nuclear waste on the ILL site.

You will report to the Head of the Health Physics, Safety and Environment Service and will have the following duties:

  • Managing the five-person team (annual leave schedule, annual interviews, organising and supervising work, liaising with other ILL services, leading weekly meetings, developing the team’s skills set, etc.)

  • Liaising with the waste management agencies ANDRA and CYCLIFE/CENTRACO to monitor contracts, documentation and specific requests, planning of shipments, etc.

  • Acting as transport safety advisor (CST - Conseiller Sécurité Transport) class 7: validation of shipping documents, audit, annual report, training of ILL staff

  • Acting as technical controller for waste management and on-site transport operations and maintaining the waste study (étude déchets) and the general operating rule relating to waste

  • Managing the waste management process: application of the Integrated Management System (IMS), monitoring of developments to keep documentation up to date, participation in audits, sample audits and process reviews, drafting of waste reports, etc.

  • Managing the process for the on-site transport of hazardous materials: application of the IMS, monitoring of developments to keep documentation up to date, participation in audits, sample audits and process reviews, signing of transport documents, ILL staff training, etc.

  • Providing forecasts for waste production/shipping and managing the associated budget

  • Participating in emergency response exercises

  • Monitoring and assisting with radioactive work sites and with the application of waste zoning on site, checking signage, ensuring compliance with waste zoning, etc.

  • Ensuring that inventories are up to date, monitoring stocks, ordering packaging, etc.

  • Involvement in various matters, both internal and external to the ILL: participation in reactor shutdown coordination and preparation meetings (planning, resource management, etc.), participation in waste and transport inspections by the French nuclear safety authorities ASN (Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire), etc.

In addition to your duties, you will also act as an advisor to the nuclear operator for questions regarding radioactive waste, as well as being a contact person to ensure compliance with waste treatment requirements in the ILL’s buildings and work areas (fire risk management, verification of signage, etc.).

 

Your profile

  • Level 7 qualification (Master’s degree or equivalent) plus at least 5 years of experience in a similar post, including team management experience

  • Expertise in nuclear metrology is required

  • Excellent writing skills in French

  • Knowledge of Basic Nuclear Installations (INB - Installation Nucléaire de Base) and the INB ministerial decree (arrêté INB)

  • You must be independent, methodical and meticulous in your work, with strong team player skills.

The diffraction group’s mission
The ILL Diffraction group operates a large suite of powder and single crystal diffractometers to carry out collaborative research programmes in various areas of chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering. The ILL is inviting applications for an instrument scientist on the D10+ single crystal diffractometer.
D10+ is dedicated to the study of magnetic structures of single crystals and thin films and plays a key role in diverse scientific areas.

Your tasks

  • Developing a research activity in magnetism in collaboration with the user community as part of a personal research programme
  • Providing support to users for scientific experiments on the D10+ diffractometer but also on other single crystal diffractometers (D9, D3)
  • Initiating development and maintenance work for the D10+ diffractometer
  • Promoting the ILL single crystal programme and conducting teaching and training activities.
Your profile
  • PhD in physics, chemistry or material sciences, or equivalent qualification together with an experience in neutron and/or X-ray magnetic scattering techniques.
  • Practical skills in single crystal diffraction, an expertise in magnetic crystallography and knowledge of the group theory are essential for the post.
  • Knowledge of polarized neutron scattering and programming languages (C++, Python, Fortran...) would be an asset.
  • As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL).
