Context
The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. It hosts over 2000 visits per year from scientists who carry out world-class research in a wide variety of scientific fields. Then come and join the ILL’s Building and Site Maintenance Service, part of the Projects and Techniques Division, which is responsible for providing and developing the building and site maintenance services to meet the requirements for a first-class institution for scientific research.

Your tasks
As a member of the Technical Installations group, you will be involved in carrying out preventive and corrective maintenance and modifications of existing installations, covering a wide range of tasks.
In this context, your duties will be in the following areas:

Maintenance in a variety of areas and general site maintenance
• Plumbing: work on PVC, copper and steel pipe work
• Maintenance of and modifications to sanitation systems: water supply, waste and rainwater
• Modifications to compressed air and industrial water supply systems
• Heating: distribution systems and associated equipment
• Ventilation: duct systems and associated equipment
• Wood and metal joinery (frames, doors and windows)
• Load handling and related operations.

Your profile

You have a Level 2 qualification (e.g. NVQ level 2, BTEC, GCSE or equivalent) or Level 3 qualification (A level, NVQ level 3 or equivalent) in commercial/industrial building maintenance or plumbing (or equivalent), together with some initial experience in an industrial environment.
• You must have practical experience of brazing, PVC bonding and crimping (stainless steel, multi-layered materials).
• You are able to read sketches and drawings.
• You have a good sense of teamwork and comply with safety instructions.
• You have an intermediate level of English.

Your tasks

  • Designing and developing software applications/tools within a Java environment.

  • Managing software development tools (such as GitLab, automated deployment, CI/CD) and implementing authentication protocols (OpenID Connect, SAML, etc.), integrating DevOps principles.

  • Keeping up to date with development trends.

Your profile

  • You have a level 5 to level 6 qualification (Higher National Diploma (HND), Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in computer science or a relevant professional background.

Your tasks

Reporting directly to the Head of the HelpDesk group, you will have the following duties:

  • Provide first-level technical support to end-users to resolve IT problems, including hardware, software, network and system issues

  • Record, track and document support requests, ensuring clear communication and efficient problemsolving

  • Assist with the regular maintenance of IT systems and the application of the necessary updates to guarantee security and performance

  • Provide advice and training to end-users to ensure optimum use of IT resources

  • Work in close collaboration with the other members of the IT team in order to improve support services, and contribute to various IT projects.

 

Your profile

  • You have a Level 5 qualification (NVQ, BTEC HNC/HND or equivalent) in Information Technology or equivalent experience

  • You have a sound knowledge of Linux environments

FRANCIA - SECOND INSTRUMENT SCIENTIST SALSA

SALSA is the ILL’s stress imager dedicated to the determination of mechanical stresses in a broad range of applications in terms of components and materials. It is designed for diffraction measurements on “real” engineering components and optimised for stress determination in metallic materials.

 

Your tasks

Working within the Diffraction Group, you will act as ‘Instrument Co-responsible’ for the diffractometer SALSA. In addition to actively pursuing your own programme of research, you will be responsible for:

  • Co-developing SALSA as well as acting as Local Contact for the instrument

  • Managing the instrument, participating both in its day-to-day running and its technical development

  • Providing support to users for scientific experiments and helping them collect data under optimum conditions

  • Promoting scientific partnerships in your field of research

  • Participating in the longer term development of sample environment and data analysis

  • Working within the Diffraction team (Instrument Scientists, Scientific Collaborators, Engineers, Software Developers) and with scientists and other ILL staff members to develop a strong scientific programme using SALSA

  • Promoting and supporting the use of SALSA by industrial partners.

 

Your profile

  • You have a PhD in physics, materials science or engineering (or equivalent) focussing on applied or industrial research.

  • Strong scientific background and expert knowledge of diffraction and residual stress analysis methods.

  • Some crystallographic background and interest that drives you to use powder diffraction or single crystal methods to investigate crystal structure and microstructure and phase composition and to monitor transitions in in situ experiments.

  • Scientific and technical interests ranging from strain imaging to mechanical engineering.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills allowing you to collaborate easily with different communities, such as fundamental scientists, on the one hand, and industrial customers, on the other.

FRANCIA - HEALTH PHYSICS TECHNICIAN

Core mission

You will join the ILL’s 11-person Health Physics Group, reporting to the Health Physics, Safety, and Environment Service (SRSE). The role of this multicultural team of experts is to ensure provision of radiation protection for staff working on ILL’s High-Flux Reactor installations and experimental facilities.

 

Your tasks

As a member of the team, you will take an active role in the following:

  • Preparing operations involving the risk of irradiation and contamination and ensuring radiation protection for those involved

  • Taking radiological measurements in the installations, performing analyses in the laboratory (in compliance with the 17025 standard), and interpreting the results

  • Periodically testing the proper functioning of the health physics instruments

  • Preparing documentation associated with your activity (instructions, reports and technical notes) Performing basic repairs to the conventional fixed or mobile health physics instruments

  • Assisting with the dosimetry monitoring for workers and the improvement of the active dosimetry system

  • Assisting with the provision of mandatory health physics training (in French or English)

The effluents laboratory operates based on the ISO 17025 standard. The measurements and sampling are carried out by the technicians in accordance with this standard. Following a period of training, you will be required to perform stand-by safety duties which are carried out outside the Institute’s normal working hours.

 

Your profile

  • Level 4 qualification (NVQ, BTEC, HNC or equivalent) in health physics or equivalent

  • At least two years of professional experience in a radioactive environment is desirable.

  • Experience in a radioactivity measurements laboratory and experience in the use of the NF EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard would be appreciated.

  • The ability to work both alone and in a team, with a sense of initiative and a methodical approach.

  • You must have a sound knowledge of English and knowledge of French is desired.
