FRANCIA - RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT TECHNICIAN

Context
The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is an international research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. It is Europe's leading centre for neutron research and operates the brightest neutron source in the world. Come and join our Radioactive Waste Management and Decontamination Group (GTDA), comprising a Head of Group, an engineer and four technicians, which forms part of the ILL's Health Physics, Safety and Environment Service (SRSE).

Your tasks
As a technician, you will play a key role in the monitoring, treatment and management of radioactive waste, as well as during work operations performed in radioactive environments at the ILL.
This post is primarily related to the management and treatment of radioactive waste. Here you will have the following main duties:

Collecting and sorting radioactive waste produced at the installations and by waste generators
• Dismantling mechanical parts and cutting up bulky waste
• Conditioning waste in the appropriate packaging (VLLW, LLW, ILW)
• Keeping inventories up to date and ensuring that the waste storage areas are in a satisfactory condition
• Characterising radioactive waste packages using gamma spectrometry, and x-ray inspections of waste drums
• Completing monitoring documentation for the radioactive waste packages
• Preparing and loading the radioactive waste packages for transport
• Performing on-site waste transport operations.

In the context of work operations in radioactive environments, your duties will include:

Decontaminating specific areas (e.g. reactor pool, hot cell, active effluent tanks, etc.) and mechanical parts and tools
• Assisting those working in radioactive environments to put on and take off protective clothing and helping to maintain the radiological cleanliness of the work sites
• Installing/dismantling containment tents
• Glove box and hot cell operations:

- Removing radioactive materials or waste under containment conditions
- Decontamination operations
- Replacing gloves under containment conditions.

Your profile

You have a relevant Level 2 or Level 3 qualification (NVQ or equivalent) as a technician specialising in operations on nuclear installations, radioactive waste management and work and decontamination operations in radioactive environments (or equivalent).
• Experience in a radioactive environment would be an advantage.
• You have excellent writing skills (for the drafting of technical reports and procedures).
• You must be able to demonstrate strict application of procedures and you must have a meticulous approach to your work.
• You are well organised, able to work independently also have excellent teamwork skills, all of which are crucial qualities for this position.
• Fluency in French essential. Knowledge of English would be an advantage.

Your tasks
You will be responsible for:

  • Monitoring current and future work programmes to identify the most suitable and promising calls to respond to, and promoting project proposals based on these.
  • Assisting ILL staff with research proposals by ensuring compliance with funding policies, coordinating submissions, and writing and revising drafts.
  • Networking with organisations in Europe (e.g. LENS, LEAPS, EIROforum, etc.) to establish a range of partners and contacts as potential consortium members in proposals and projects.
  • Lobbying at national, European and Commission levels to create future calls tailored to the needs of the ILL.
  • Conducting follow-up on submitted proposals and liaising with internal and external stakeholders.

Your profile

  • Recent and significant experience, including a strong track record, in preparation and submission of national and preferably EU proposals.
  • In-depth knowledge of European Commission project methodology and terminology.
  • Excellent communication skills for lobbying and networking.
  • Excellent written communication and editing skills in English.
  • Experience in an international research environment would be appreciated.
  • Experience in project management.

Your tasks
As a member of the Technical Installations group, you will be involved in carrying out preventive and corrective maintenance and modifications of existing installations, covering a wide range of tasks.

The restaurant staff are also in charge of preparing the food that is served out on our tours and events, which means that the workload differs and makes some periods more hectic and some calmer. The restaurants are open year around, with the most guests visiting us Dec-Mar and then extend the team with seasonal chefs. 

SKILLS: 

  • At least two years of experience working as a chef. 
  • Previous experience working with chef’s table-experiences and/or à la carte is considered as a merit. 
  • Good English level (at least B2).
