MECHANICAL DESIGN AND PROCESS ENGINEER - FRANCE

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, and founded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons and operates the brightest neutron source in the world. The ILL’s Reactor Division, whose role is to produce the neutrons needed to supply the ILL’s scientific instruments, is responsible for operating all the technical installations associated with the reactor. It currently has a vacancy for a: Mechanical Design and Process Engineer

Duties:
You will initially join the project team working on the “Horizontal Cold Source refurbishment” project. The Horizontal Cold Source is a piece of equipment located very close to the reactor core that contains deuterium liquid at 20K. Your work will involve redesigning those components of the existing Horizontal Cold Source that need to be refurbished.
This project will last several years. You will work in collaboration with the other groups in the Reactor Division. Later you will be asked to work on other important reactor projects requiring the skills of a mechanical design or process engineer (creation of new installations, seismic reinforcement of existing structures, etc.).

 

Your main duties will be to:

  • Propose solutions for the creation, refurbishment and/or replacement of equipment or process loops

  • Organise project planning and prepare the associated budgets

  • Produce design specifications and monitor the carrying out of studies

  • Produce specifications for the procurement of equipment

  • Take part in the organisation of calls for tender and supplier selection

  • Monitor all manufacturing stages (inspections, validation, non-conformity analysis, etc.), equipment acceptance, …

  • Monitor the installation of equipment (equipment assembly procedure, qualification test procedure, commissioning of installations) in collaboration with other ILL services or outside subcontractors.

This position involves working with a high degree of autonomy in the short term.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Mechanical design and process engineer with at least 10 years’ professional experience

  • Knowledge of equipment using hydrogen

  • Knowledge of designing processes for the treatment of fluids and gases

  • Knowledge of physical measurements and instrumentation

  • Knowledge of mechanical design (structures, SKID, etc.)

  • Experience of manufacturing under a quality assurance system

  • Excellent writing skills (procedures, technical specifications, etc.)

Duties:
As a member of the Automation, Operations and Fluids group, your main duties will include:
  • Programming PLCs and MMI systems
  • Analysing and designing automation systems for projects involving custom-built machines (vacuum management, atmosphere and gas management, vacuum control, safety modules, process control) 
  • Designing electrical drawings (IGE+XAO software)
  • Drafting specifications for the manufacture of electrical cabinets, including consulting potential suppliers ad and selecting and supervising the subcontractor
  • Acceptance and testing of cabinets, drafting test reports
  • Supervising ILL wiring operations
  • Drafting related documents (user manuals, reports, functional analysis, etc.).

Qualifications and experience:
  • Level 4 or Level 5 qualification (HNC/HND or equivalent) in industrial computing or automation/process control.

  • Some initial experience of programming PLCs and of industrial computing.

Duties:
Your principal mission will be to improve the image and visibility of the ILL, and to modernise its digital presence, qualitatively and quantitatively.
You will pilot and manage the production of new videos, computer animations and graphics, and printed visuals. You will be responsible for regularly updating the ILL photo- and video library. You will develop the ILL's presence on the social networks, following the trends and methodically analysing the user statistics.
You will assist ILL Management in the production of documents and presentations.
You will work creatively to organise or assist in the production of events presenting the ILL's scientific achievements and enhancing its overall image.
You will bring your expertise to bear in the communication workgroups set up in the framework of the ILL's European contracts and collaborations. You may also be called upon to support the ILL's industry unit.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Master's degree in Communication preferably, and solid experience in communication in a scientific environment (minimum 10 years)
  • Very good scientific culture
  • Solid communication skills and a capacity for negotiation
  • Ability to develop a communication strategy
  • Good familiarity with Adobe graphical tools (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, Indesign), video tools (Première Pro and/or others) and web software (Typo3, Wordpress, Indico, LimeSurvey)

We receive over 2000 visiting scientists per year to carry out world-class research in a wide variety of scientific fields.  The Computing for Science (CS) Group in the ILL’s Science Division is currently recruiting: Scientific Software Programmer

The mission of the CS Group is to deliver and support the critical data treatment software that enables visiting scientists to exploit their scattering data effectively during experiments. In this context, your duties will focus primarily on data reduction for a range of instruments in the Mantid code. Data reduction is the transformation of the raw data recorded by the detectors to physically meaningful observables in absolute scale.
Mantid (www.mantidproject.org) is an open source project providing a framework for high-performance computing and visualization of neutron scattering data developed and maintained by a large international collaboration of neutron sources worldwide, with ILL on-board since 2016 as part of an internal software modernization program.
 

Duties:
You will be part of the Scientific Computing group at ILL and work under the supervision of the project leader, having the following responsibilities:

  • Analyse the scientific requirements and existing software solutions.
  • Design and develop data reduction algorithms and workflows in Mantid framework. (C++/ Python)
  • Extend, improve, optimize, and refactor existing algorithms.
  • Benchmark the workflows against legacy software.
  • Perform scientific validation of the software using known data and pseudo-experiments
  • Develop binary data loaders in NeXus format, and data savers in various formats.
  • Develop interactive Graphical User Interfaces and data visualisation tools.
  • Participate in the continuous improvements and refactors of the framework.
  • Provide comprehensive unit and integration tests.
  • Write appropriate scientific and technical documentations.
  • Communicate actively with the instrument scientists, visiting scientists and other developers to ensure that the software meets the requirements and is delivered in a timely and effective manner.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or related subject
  • Good knowledge of modern C++ and Python programming languages and standard libraries.
  • Solid background in Maths and Physics
  • Good knowledge of OOP, software development process, best practices and tools: version control, build systems, continuous integration, testing, debugging, profiling, etc.
  • Fluency in Linux/Unix environments.
  • Excellent technical, analytical, problem solving, team playing and communication skills.
  • Professional experience as software developer would be valued.
  • Experience appreciated in some of the following fields : scientific data analysis; software design and architecture; experience with STL, Boost, Qt, and numpy, scipy, qtpy libraries; experience with Git, GitHub, CMake and Jenkins; knowledge of parallel, distributed and generic programming; knowledge of neutron scattering and/or instrumentation.

We currently have a vacancy for an: Expert in scientific computing You will join the Scientific Computing group and as part of the European PaNOSC (Photon and Neutron Open Science Cloud) project. PaNOSC brings together 6 major world-class European research infrastructures to create a fully integrated, pan-European information and analysis infrastructure supporting the open access and easy process of scientific data. You are responsible of developing a framework for virtual neutron experiments.

Duties:
As the main responsible locally of PANOSC’s workpackage 5 (VINYL: Virtual Neutron and x-ray Laboratory) you will:

  • Develop an accurate instrument description using ray-tracing tools (in particular, McStas) together with a database of signals from representative samples to be used as benchmarks for the virtual experiments.

  • Expose those tools to external users through remote desktop and execution environments, providing also access to local HPC resources.

  • Create script examples (possibly in the form of Jupyter notebooks) demonstrating the full workflow and the interaction between different elements (experimental and simulation databases, x-ray tracing tools, reduction and analysis software, etc.).

  • Coordinate the activities and collaborate with the other project partners, in particular with the other neutron facility involved (ESS).

  • Interact with the IT department to setup and maintain the needed infrastructure.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or a related discipline.

  • Good knowledge of modern object oriented programming languages, in particular C/C++ and Python.

  • Good knowledge of software development process, best practices and tools: version control, build systems, continuous integration, testing, debugging, profiling, etc.

  • A Professional experience as software developer would be appreciated.

  • Excellent technical, analytical, problem solving, team playing and communication skills.

FRANCIA - POST DOCTORAL FELLOW IN THEORY GROUP

The Institute welcomes over 2000 visits of scientists per year to carry out world-class research in solid-state physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. Funded primarily by its three founder members: France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements with 10 other countries. The Science Division currently has a vacancy: Post Doctoral Fellow in Theory group

 
Duties:
The position is within the ILL theory group to work in collaboration with Prof. MB Lepetit, on ab initio electronic structure and spectroscopic calculations on strongly correlated systems, with a focus on magnetic excitations and multiferroic compounds.
The research work will include working on real systems in order to identify and quantify the degrees of freedom responsible for the magneto-electric coupling and build comprehensive models of multiferroics systems, and/or participating in the development of an in-house code for the determination of the magnetic spectra (an important aspect of multiferroics properties). The work will bring the candidate to collaborate with experimentalists working on the subject (ILL users groups and scientists), in particular with inelastic neutron scattering experimentalists.

Qualifications and experience:

  • PhD in physics, quantum chemistry or materials science.
  • Strong background in quantum mechanics.
  • Knowledge of standard ab initio calculation methods.
  • Knowledge appreciated in some of the following fields = modern parallelisation and programming methods (open MP, MPI, …), Fortran and /or crystallography.

You will be part of the European project PaNOSC = Photon and Neutron Open Science Cloud.
This project brings together six major world-class European research infrastructures to create a fully integrated, pan-European information and analysis infrastructure supporting the scientific process.

Duties:
As an active member of the ILL’s “Network and Data Services” group and through your involvement in the PaNOSC project, you will have the following duties:

  • Assisting scientific users with managing the storage of scientific data
  • Participating in the activities of the Network and Data Services group, in particular the maintenance and development of the cloud computing infrastructure (OpenStack, KVM, Docker, etc.)
  • Contributing, with the help of the group and of experts in the field, to the implementation of a solution enabling the transfer of large amounts of data between remote sites
  • Assisting with the deployment and maintenance of tools to give scientists access to cloud computing.
Qualifications and experience:
  • NVQ level 4 (or equivalent qualification) in IT infrastructure.

  • Knowledge of OpenStack, virtualisation and container technologies would also be appreciated.

Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

Notes:
Fixed-term contract (contract end: 1st December 2022).
Medical fitness for work under ionising radiation is required.
