RESEARCH ENGINEER IN COMPUTER SCIENCE – BIG-MAP EUROPEAN PROJECT

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific instruments. The Institute welcomes over 2000 visits of scientists per year to carry out world-class research in solid-state physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. Funded primarily by its three founder members: France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements with 10 other countries. The Science Division currently has a vacancy: Research Engineer in Computer Science – BIG-MAP European Project

 

The Research Engineer position is open in the framework of the groundbreaking 3-years BIG-MAP European H2020 project, which forms part of the Battery 2030+ large-scale European initiative: https://battery2030.eu.
The Battery Interface Genome Materials Accelerated Platform (BIG-MAP) is dedicated to the development of a modular, closed-loop infrastructure and methodology to bridge physical insights and data-driven approaches in order to accelerate the discovery of sustainable battery chemistries and technologies. BIG-MAP will integrate machine learning, computer simulations and AI-orchestrated experiments and syntheses to accelerate battery advances and optimization. The ILL, world leader in Neutron science and technologies, is a partner of the BIG-MAP consortium, which totals 34 participants from 15 countries, spanning renowned academic experts, Large Scale research Facilities (LSF), research laboratories and industry leaders.
 

Duties:
As a member of our Scientific Computing, you will work closely with other groups within the Science Division at ILL, in particular the Industrial Liaison Unit, the Diffraction and Large Scale Structures group. You will be responsible for:

  • Performing data analysis to extract main observables from experiments and deliver the analyzed data in a defined format,

  • Establishing standards and procedures/workflows for data analysis, automatization and protocols,

  • Taking part in the development of automated (standardized) visualization and pre-treatment software,

  • Working with a team involved in developing a feedback loop between experiments and computational simulations, including the definition and implementation of demonstrator workflows.

You will evolve in a multidisciplinary, international environment and interact with our BIG-MAP partners; in particular, a team composed of chemists/electrochemists, materials scientists, physicists and beam-line scientists from battery specialists CEA and RS2E, and synchrotron centers ESRF and SOLEIL. The opportunity to participate in experiments under the responsibility of instrument scientists at LSF will be given.
 

Qualifications and experience:
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest for data analysis and a solid experience in software development with the following qualifications:

  • PhD in Computing Science or Physics with particular interest in experimental data handling,

  • Solid experience with C++, Python and all the best practices in software development,

  • Some familiarity with software tools for single crystal or powder diffraction and/or processing multi-dimensional tomographic imaging data sets would be ideal,

  • Knowledge in AI and deep learning techniques will be a bonus.

Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

Fonctions :
Au sein de la Division Réacteur, sous l’autorité du Chef de Groupe Sécurité Accueil, vous contribuez à la sécurité des biens et des personnes. Membre de l’équipe Sécurité Accueil, vous participez à la surveillance des différentes zones de protection de l’ILL et vous travaillez en collaboration avec les agents de quart de la salle de contrôle. Vos missions, en régime posté 2*12h, sont les suivantes :

  • Au sein du poste de Sécurité, assurer la surveillance du site via la vidéosurveillance et la remontée des alarmes.

  • Assurer les actions adéquates en fonction des situations rencontrées (alarmes déclenchées ou évènements sécuritaires).

  • Attribuer les autorisations d’accès.

  • Effectuer les contrôles d’accès d’entrées et sorties des différentes zones.

  • Exécuter des rondes de surveillance.

  • Procéder aux levées de doutes.

  • Faire partie de l'équipe de première intervention en cas d'alerte incendie.

  • Réaliser des interventions de secours à victime en cas de besoin.

  • Traiter et transmettre les informations liées à la sécurité du site, renseigner la main courante.

  • Participer aux vérifications et essais périodiques relevant de la responsabilité du Groupe Sécurité Accueil.

  • Faciliter l’accès au niveau C du réacteur aux visiteurs et scientifiques dans les règles de la protection physique.

 

Formation / Expérience :

  • Vous êtes titulaire d’un diplôme de niveau Baccalauréat ou équivalent,

  • Vous possédez une expérience professionnelle dans les métiers de la sécurité ou de la lutte contre l’incendie.

  • Vous êtes résistant au stress et vous restez maitre de vous en toute circonstance.

  • Vous savez appliquer les procédures et les consignes appropriées, tout en sachant faire preuve d’initiative.

  • Vous êtes titulaire d’une carte professionnelle de sécurité délivrée par le CNAPS en cours de validité.

 

Connaissances linguistiques :
Le caractère international de notre centre de recherche nous amène à accorder une attention particulière aux candidatures provenant également d'autres pays que la France. De bonnes compétences d’expression orales et écrites en français sont requises, ainsi qu’un niveau intermédiaire en anglais. Des connaissances en allemand seraient un atout.

Import/Export Assistant

 

Duties:
Every year the ILL’s Purchasing Service places orders and contracts both in France and abroad (Europe and worldwide) worth a total of around 50 million euros. Reporting to the Head of this Service, which is part of the ILL’s Administration Division, you will be responsible for some of the shipping requests handled by the Purchasing Service as well as for providing administrative support for certain Purchasing Service activities.   
 
Working in tandem with the Institute's freight-forwarding officer and in collaboration with the stores, you will be responsible for transactions involving European Union countries or third-party countries.
Your main duties will be to:

  • Manage intra-Community movements of goods and import/export operations with third-party countries,

  • Manage special customs arrangements (exemptions from duty, temporary imports and exports, etc.) in liaison with our forwarding agent and the local customs office,

  • Organise the transport of conventional and dangerous goods in liaison with the ILL service requesting the shipment,

  • Select transport companies for the shipment of heavy equipment or special items,

  • Prepare monthly Intrastat reports on the exchange of goods and services (DEB and DES declarations),

  • Manage disputes,

  • Handle transport documents, verify shipment invoices and allocate them to the appropriate ILL service or experiment, and archive the documents for administrative purposes in the shared system.

 
Working in tandem with the Purchasing Assistant, you will take charge of certain administrative tasks for the Purchasing Service:

  • Provide administrative support for the preparation of calls for tenders via an electronic platform, in liaison with non-French suppliers and representatives of the ILL’s Associate countries: sourcing, invitations to tender, follow-up, summary reports and statistics,

  • Prepare and take minutes of meetings in English,

  • Follow-up cross-functional issues with the Finance Service, such as the creation of suppliers,

  • Monitor performance indicators and compile regular reports, with a view to producing administrative documents for the Head of Service, ILL Management and the Institute’s Associates.

 
Qualifications and experience:

  • Level 4/5 qualification (HND, NVQ or equivalent professional qualification) in transport and logistics or international commerce with some initial experience of shipping and customs, ideally in the research sector or, as a minimum requirement, in industry,

  • You are fully familiar with French and EU customs regulations, special customs arrangements and Incoterms. Training in IATA dangerous goods regulations would be an advantage,

  • You have good writing and administrative skills,

  • You are proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite and have a thorough understanding of ERP systems (SAP/ORACLE),

  • You must be fluent in both written and spoken English.

 
You have excellent interpersonal skills, strong analytical skills and a meticulous approach to your work. Your ability to manage priorities will be an essential asset for this position, which requires both efficiency and responsiveness.
