EXPERIENCED SOFTWARE DEVELOPER

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, and founded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific instruments. Every year, the Institute hosts over 2000 visits by scientists, who come to carry out world-class research in solid-state physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. The "Projects and Techniques Division”, which is responsible for the development of the ILL’s instruments and for technical support, currently has a vacancy in its IT Service for an: Experienced Software Developer

 

You will be part of the European project PaNOSC = the Photon and Neutron Open Science Cloud. This project brings together six major world-class European research infrastructures to create a fully integrated, pan-European information and analysis infrastructure supporting the scientific process.
 

Duties:
The Experienced Software Developer will work with the other members of the IT/DSS group on the development tasks related to Work Package 3 of PaNOSC (tools and services to allow scientists to search for, and obtain, scientific datasets as well as DOI and data lifecycle management), Work Package 4 (remote data analysis services providing remote desktop - Desktop as a Service - and Jupyter notebooks in a common PaNOSC portal) and Work Package 6 (refurbishment of the software catalogue).
Your principal duties include:

  • Actively participating in internal software design meetings promoting innovative solutions

  • Developing the services and tools associated with the different work packages in collaboration with the other team members

  • Assisting in collaborative development involving regular video conferences as well as workshops at other PaNOSC partner facilities.

Qualifications and experience:

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area.

  • Minimum 5 years’ (preferably 8 years or more) experience in back-end web development and conception

  • Confirmed experience in Java (Spring, Hibernate, Guice, JAX-RS, Jersey, …) and preferably NodeJS (TypeScript) as well

  • Proven experience with software design and architecture

  • Involvement in all stages of software development (design, dev, testing, integration, deployment)

  • Experience working on micro-services would be a plus (architecture, design and deployment)

  • Comfortable working with relational databases and writing SQL requests

  • At ease with the command line (Linux systems and DevOps tasks)

  • Front-end development of single-page applications (angular, react, vue) would be a plus.

Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

The Reactor Division, whose role is to produce the neutrons needed to supply the ILL’s scientific instruments, is responsible for operating all the technical installations associated with the reactor. We currently have a vacancy for an: Electrical Instrumentation CAD technician

Duties:
Working in the Design Office of the Reactor Division’s “Electricity and Electronics Service” (SEE), which is responsible for the maintenance of the high-flux reactor’s electrical distribution, I/C and automation systems, you will take charge of the management of all the SEE’s electrical drawings. You will work in close collaboration with the other technicians and engineers in the SEE. Your main duties will be to:
  • Produce and modify electrical drawings using CAD software
  • Update drawings and the list of wires and cables affected by modifications
  • Check drawings produced by suppliers
  • Enter equipment in the CMMS for the management of spare parts
  • Perform design studies on modifications to electrical installations.
Qualifications and experience:
  • You have a Level 5 (HND, foundation degree or equivalent) or Level 6 (apprenticeship degree or equivalent) qualification in electrical engineering.
  • You have some initial design office experience with the design of electrical installations and the production of drawings.
  • You are proficient in the use of SEE Electrical Expert.

FIRE SAFETY PROJECT LEADER

The ILL is a fundamental research institute founded and financed by France, Germany and the United Kingdom. It is Europe's leading centre for research using neutrons and operates the brightest neutron source in the world. The ILL's Reactor Division is responsible for producing the neutrons feeding the instruments of research and for operating all the technical installations associated with the reactor. It currently has a vacancy for a: Fire safety project leader

 

Duties:
You will work within the Reactor Division's Reactor Operations Service and be responsible for running projects to reinforce fire safety. These projects emanate from the latest ILL ten-year safety review; they involve:

  • Reinforcing fire safety procedures in sensitive sectors of the ILL

  • Developing the Fire Detection System

  • Installing a sprinkler system in the experimental hall in the reactor building

  • installing a manual sprinkler system in the most inaccessible areas

  • installing a second fire-fighting riser in the reactor building

  • developing the ILL's evacuation procedures

  • installing passive protective measures to significantly improve the fire resistance of sensitive items (cable ways, walls, etc.)

  • performing a review and upgrading to compliance, if necessary, of various sectorisation components (fire doors and damper, fire sectors).

All of these projects must be led in strict compliance with the ILL's internal processes.
 

Your main duties will be to:

  • prepare technical specifications for studies and installations

  • launch and monitor all the necessary studies (APS, APD, EXE)

  • identify the appropriate interfaces and define the technical solutions in liaison with the ILL's groups and services

  • monitor the projects (quality, costs, deadlines) and operations (launch, technical controls, acceptance tests, completion)

  • produce or update all the documentation required for the project or impacted by the project (installation modification forms, technical and operating documents, etc.)

  • ensure regular reporting to the Head of the Reactor Division

  • bring your expertise to bear on the ILL's fire management procedures, and assist the personnel responsible for maintaining ILL's fire protection systems as well as those working on ILL projects.

Qualifications and experience:

  • A Master’s level engineering degree or equivalent covering environment quality and safety or fire risk management, together with solid experience in project management

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience required

  • Knowledge of the relevant technical standards and specifications (Eurocodes, APSAD…)

  • Familiarity with fire simulation software (FDS, Cfast) would be an advantage.

Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France.
